Active piloting is not simply making constant inputs. Over-controlling means making inputs you do not need. It can also mean holding brake pressure as a fear response rather than allowing the brakes to release fully.

In a thermal, pilots should feel pressure changes through the brakes. They should increase and refine their brake range in response to those changes so that they maintain an appropriate connection with the wing.

The point is connection without unnecessary control. You are not trying to hold the wing still. You are trying to feel what it is telling you and respond in a way that matches what is actually happening.

Pressure, timing and proportion

A common mistake is being late when the pressure drops. If a collapse is developing, you may need more than a small refinement of pressure. In professionally supervised SIV and wing-control training, pilots learn that a deeper and more decisive input may sometimes be needed to change the angle of attack enough to stop or substantially reduce a collapse.

Pilots are often not decisive enough. They may respond late or fail to use enough brake range to change the angle of attack sufficiently. The result may limit the collapse without preventing it.

However, the deeper the brake input, the more important the timing of the release becomes. A collapse punch can use the full brake range when appropriate, but the hand must release as soon as the input has been completed and the wing begins to reopen. A brief, well-timed punch is very different from leaving the hand down long enough to spin the wing.

How stress changes brake use

Stress affects this profoundly. When something begins to go wrong, pilots commonly retain brake pressure. In a parachutal or stalled state, that retained pressure may be enough to keep the wing in that state when the pilot needs to relinquish the pressure.

Releasing pressure under stress can be psychologically difficult. That is why active piloting is not just a technical subject. It involves feeling pressure, understanding what the pressure change means, choosing a proportionate response, being decisive when required, timing the input and timing the release.

It is not constant brake movement, and it is not holding pressure simply because the pilot feels afraid. It is part of the wider learning system explained in the Pure Method, and it links directly to mental bandwidth and the human side of technical flying.
